Parent urges return of student lockers, cites hygiene, carrying burden concerns

A parent urged the Cahuilla County Board of Education on Aug. 12 to restore student locker access at middle and high schools, saying her child and peers must carry heavy bags all day and sometimes remain in sweaty gym clothes because they cannot change between classes.
Nadia Jackson told the board she had contacted her child’s principal, who had told her the school ‘‘haven't had lockers in years.’’ Jackson said the lack of access causes discomfort and possible social issues and asked the district to ‘‘give back the lockers to our children’’ where lockers physically exist. ‘‘It just seems like a inconvenience I wanna fight for for my child,’’ she said during the five-minute public comment slot.
Board members asked which school was affected; Jackson said Lee Middle School. Dr. Horton said staff would follow up with the principal and with Jackson after the meeting. No board action or policy change was taken at the meeting; the comment was taken under the public-comment agenda item and will prompt staff follow-up.
