Pine Forest teacher John Owens named finalist for statewide CTE teacher award

The Cumberland County Board of Education recognized John Owens, a marketing teacher at Pine Forest High School, as a finalist for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCAT) 2026 Burroughs Welcome Fund North Carolina Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year award. The board held the recognition during its regular meeting.
NCAT Executive Director Brock Womble announced the selection and introduced representatives from the state who joined the recognition, saying, “it is my privilege to announce that John Owens ... has been selected as a finalist for the NCAT 20 26 Burroughs Welcome Fund North Carolina Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award.” The announcement noted Owens will attend a week of professional development in December and that judges will select the winner after interviews and a portfolio review; the winner will be announced at a recognition event in Greensboro on Dec. 5.
The award honors CTE teachers who the program says “exemplify the highest standard of excellence in preparing students for both college and career pathways and supporting workforce development.” John Owens was recognized onstage alongside Pine Forest Principal Joelle McDonald and Chip Lucas, Cumberland County Schools’ executive director of CTE.
The board presentation included remarks from NCAT and Department of Public Instruction representatives and concluded with the board’s formal acknowledgment of Owens as a finalist.
