The equipment will be purchased via a statewide term contract and funded from capital equipment.
Staff said the district purchased five reel mowers for schools last year and planned to supply additional schools this year — the current order is intended for Jack Britt, Douglas Byrd (one provided by student activities), and E.E. Smith. The equipment is sold as a tractor with interchangeable attachments (mower reels, aerators, bush hogs) so schools can acquire further implements later as needed.
Board members asked whether the mowers were strictly for athletic fields or also for general campus mowing; staff clarified these are specialty real (reel) mowers for athletic fields, different from rotary lawn mowers used for general grounds. Members sought details about maintenance responsibility and lifecycle: staff said day-to-day maintenance is the school’s responsibility (typically coaches for athletic fields), scheduled reel sharpening is done twice a year by district maintenance staff, and warranty coverage applies for initial periods; staff estimated longevity of 15 to 20 years depending on care.
Several board members expressed concern about having only one supplier on the state contract and asked whether alternatives were considered; staff said the vendor was procured through the statewide contract after coaches and student activities staff tested machines at a district site and gave feedback. One member requested more competition but acknowledged specialty equipment limits the number of local suppliers. Board members also discussed requiring schools to document routine maintenance and produce inspection/checklist records if equipment fails later, and staff agreed records and coordination with athletic directors would be part of ongoing oversight.
A motion to approve the purchase was made, seconded and passed in committee.
