Portage food service team wins five IDOE recognitions; Kelly Pennington named Food Service Employee of the Year

At its May 27 meeting the Portage Township Schools board recognized the district’s food service staff after the department earned a set of awards from state and national food-service recognition programs.
A district presenter announced that Kelly Pennington won the Indiana Department of Education Food Service Employee of the Year award. The presenter said the food service department earned five awards by increasing scratch cooking, reducing sugar in the breakfast program ahead of next year’s standards, operating hydroponic gardens in schools and submitting recipes for local students; one recipe received an honorable mention from USA Rice.
The presenter credited the staff’s work toward healthier-meal goals and invited staff to stand so the board could recognize them. Board members praised the “unsung heroes” of the schools and emphasized the role school meals play in student nutrition and achievement.
No formal board action was required; the recognition was a public acknowledgement of staff achievements.
