Portage Township Schools’ communications office announced July 28 that it earned five awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), including two awards of excellence, two awards of merit and one honorable mention.
The awards recognize the district’s work in areas including photography, newsletters, marketing materials and branding. District communications director Melissa Devers told the board the honors included an honorable mention for a photograph titled “Step Up to the Homecoming Pep Rally,” an award of merit for the district’s Fort H Township Schools “Fast 5” newsletter, an award of merit for the Portage Proud community newsletter, and awards of excellence for a press release announcing Portage High School’s Project ADAM Heart Safe School designation and for the Portage Township Schools branding guide.
Devers said the Fast 5 newsletter was shortened after district staff found open rates were declining; since the change, the newsletter typically records about 10,000 views per issue. Digital media specialist Emily Cozina led the branding work that produced the district’s new branding guide, Devers said.
Why it matters: district communications help families and community members access timely information about school programs, calendars and student recognition. Board members commended the communications staff for improving engagement and producing materials intended for quick consumption.
The board did not take formal action related to the awards beyond accepting the presentation.
