Board approves Kentfield partnership to pilot CTE rotating program for fifth graders

The San Rafael City Schools Board of Trustees approved an MOU on Aug. 26, 2025, with Kentfield School District and the Marin County Office of Education to pilot a CTE (career and technical education) rotation for fifth graders in the district’s after-school Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP).
Director of community partnerships Kevin Gonzales described the pilot as a short rotating program (six to eight weeks) that will bring Kentfield instructors and pre-cut materials to district sites so fifth graders can be exposed to hands-on maker and woodworking experiences. The district said materials will be prepared to avoid safety risks and instructors will supervise activities; the program is intended to inform later CTE pathways that feed into high school makerspaces and woodshop classes.
Staff noted that the pilot will be funded from an existing CTE grant allocation rather than from the district’s unrestricted general fund. Trustee comments were supportive, and the board approved the MOU by voice vote. Director Gonzales said the partnership is designed to build interest in CTE pathways, give students hands-on skill exposure, and coordinate with makers and CTE pathways at Davidson and San Rafael High School.
The board also approved a second, small charitable donation (a $2,500 contribution from the Pasha Group) to the high school applied arts classroom during the same meeting; staff said that donation will be used for materials and supplies.
