Dozens of parents, teachers and community members used the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD public-comment period on May 19 to thank outgoing Trustee Tammy Nakamura for three years of service and volunteer work in the district.
The board allotted time for 26 speakers and limited each to one minute. Calls of thanks came from residents across the district; Tony Venozak said Nakamura was "patient and kind," and several speakers cited her fundraising for special athletics and the Special Olympics. Debbie Meek, a Grapevine Rotarian who is not a GCISD resident, said Nakamura and her team raised more than $35,000 to support bocce ball and Special Olympics programming.
The board also formally recognized Nakamura at the meeting's board-member service recognition. Trustees presented an award and thanked her for launching the GCISD Special Athletics Booster Club and for years of local volunteer work.
Not all speakers echoed the praise. Rachel Wall, a GCISD resident, criticized the board for compensation decisions affecting teachers: "They received no raise last year. They did not even get their step," she said, referencing step increases that affect teacher pay. Wall noted the district traditionally finalizes a budget in June and urged trustees to consider the timing and impact of compensation votes.
Other public comments touched on district operations, local property appraisal notices and state-level education policy, but the dominant theme of the evening's public-comment period was appreciation for Nakamura's community service.
No board action resulted from the public comments; the comments were recorded as part of the meeting record.
