At an Abington Heights School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Schafer said the district's middle-school construction is on track and outlined traffic and safety changes families should expect ahead of the school year. He told the board that the front of the middle school is fenced off and vehicle drop-off will be moved to the rear while an expanded faculty and visitor parking lot on the east side is completed.
The update explained that the top coat for the expanded faculty and visitor lot was scheduled “today and tomorrow” and that the top coat for the East Access Road is scheduled for Monday, after which the district will provide video and guidance to families about drop-off and end-of-day procedures. Dr. Schafer said the district will run buses and vans through the new circulation pattern on Tuesday to confirm turning radii and operations.
Dr. Schafer framed the work as a major construction project that will cause inconvenience but is intended to increase safety. He said the district and its contractors have multiple safety plans, including a schedule in which most workers begin before 6:30 a.m.; if they do not start at 6:30 a.m., noisy work will not begin until 9 a.m. Deliveries are staggered and the noisiest work was scheduled for the summer to limit disruptions during the school year. He cautioned that paving and completion remain weather-dependent.
The superintendent also updated the board on high-school site work: the multipurpose field and visitor bleachers are complete, and the home-side bleachers were expected to be finished in about 10 to 12 days, with subsequent cleanup and parent communications about access. Dr. Schafer said the district collaborated with South Abington Township on paving and sidewalk work on Noble Road but noted the township-managed work is progressing more slowly than the district project.
Board members asked for updates and the superintendent said staff will continue to provide community notices as work progresses and after school starts.
Families and staff should expect additional communications from the district with final traffic patterns and safety details before students return to school.
