During the public-comment portion of Tuesday’s board meeting, a parent urged trustees to re-examine the district’s recent switch of employee health coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas to UnitedHealthcare.
Luis Garza addressed trustees and said UnitedHealthcare is the subject of federal civil and criminal probes and recent lawsuits alleging improper denials of claims, settlements and class actions. He said those issues translate to delayed care and surprise bills for patients and families. Garza said he had emailed the board before the vote outlining his concerns and that only one board member acknowledged receipt; he urged the board to review the procurement process, ensure continuity-of-care safeguards and establish regular performance reviews of the new provider.
Garza asked the board to confirm whether the district’s evaluation committee considered UnitedHealthcare’s legal and ethical record before the board approved the switch; he requested that the district guarantee continuity of care and a strong appeals process for employees already in treatment. He also asked the district to commit to an ongoing review of the provider’s performance and impact on employees.
The comments were part of the public-comment period; trustees did not respond with immediate action on the record during the meeting.
