Nava reported 5,326 students preliminarily identified as emergent bilingual, representing about 28 percent of the district’s total enrollment. She said this is a decline of roughly five percentage points from the previous year. Nava described the figures as preliminary because the district’s language-proficiency assessment committees complete the identification and the window for that work runs through the fourth week of the school year.
The report was informational; trustees did not take action. Nava’s presentation included campus-by-campus counts for elementary, middle and high schools and a district-level graph, and staff said they will finalize and publish the certified counts after the identification period ends.
