LAPEER, Mich. — The Lapeer County Board of Commissioners approved several personnel and organizational actions on Aug. 14, including authorization to fill a vacant corrections officer position, temporary staffing for animal control, and an internal management reassignment for community corrections.
The board approved a motion to authorize the sheriff's department to fill an upcoming vacant corrections officer position (position number 142, pay grade S4) at step 2 based on the candidate's five years of corrections experience. The motion specifies that the hire carries no additional cost to the county contingent on acceptance of a lateral transfer agreement between the county and the union, per the county's labor counsel recommendation.
Separately, the board amended the table of organization for county administration to move community corrections staff and operations from the court administrator/magistrate to the county administrator/controller. The management change was described as immediate and intended to allow reevaluation of community corrections operations, leave approvals, purchases and payroll; the arrangement will remain until the county administrator determines otherwise.
The board also approved adding a temporary part-time kennel attendant position for animal control at pay grade 13 (entry step) for a period of six months, with no additional cost to the county general fund. Commissioners said the temporary hire is to cover leave for an existing kennel attendant and avoid overtime for remaining staff; animal control will return to the personnel committee with an update before the six-month period ends.
A motion concerning another personnel item (personnel motion number 5) was moved to be considered at the committee of the whole in September with authority to act. All personnel motions discussed at the meeting were moved, supported and approved by voice vote.
