Council adopts floodplain zoning amendments to align with FEMA community rating system

The Reedsburg Common Council on Aug. 11, 2025, approved Ordinance 1975-25, an amendment to the city's floodplain zoning ordinance intended to conform local rules with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Community Rating System (CRS) and the state model code.

Brian (Plan Commission presenter) told council the ordinance adds a small number of provisions "to make sure that we're 2 feet above the flood plain level with the base flood elevation," and that the additions address items such as utilities and basements to match the CRS program and the state model code.

The council held a second-reading public hearing on the ordinance at the meeting and heard no public comment. Jason moved to approve Ordinance 1975-25; the motion was seconded by Missy. Council voted by roll call; all voting members voted in favor and the ordinance carried.

Why it matters: aligning city floodplain rules with FEMA's CRS can affect how the community qualifies for credits under the CRS program, which in turn can influence residents' flood insurance rates and the city's flood‑plain management practices.
