County approves updated GDOT inmate-work agreement raising county payment for correctional officer to $68,389.02

Harris County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve an updated agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation to host an inmate work detail that includes up to 10 inmates and one correctional officer.
Under the revised agreement GDOT will provide the vehicle, tools and materials for the detail and will pay the county $68,389.02 for the correctional officer for the contract period through July 31, 2026. The prior agreement had provided $39,500 for the correctional officer, and county staff said they negotiated the higher amount.
County staff described the renegotiated contract as “making more sense” financially. The inmate detail will assist with maintenance of GDOT equipment, buildings and rights of way; the detail may also work in adjacent counties as part of GDOT operations.
The board approved the agreement and authorized the county manager and county clerk to execute necessary documents.
