Maple Lakes residents told they can install covers after board review; county staff says no permit required

A resident representing Maple Lakes subdivision asked the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday for confirmation that the neighborhood may reinstall safety covers that county staff had previously removed.
Robert Hay, who identified himself as an owner in Maple Lakes, told commissioners this was the third time he had presented the issue and said the subdivision had proposed a solution in April. “We came back, proposed a, in April, a solution to address those risks. And I’m here today, hopefully get resolution,” Hay said.
Hay said the board had previously indicated approval for the proposed solution but that he had not heard further from county staff. County staff told Hay they would coordinate follow-up. A county official in the meeting added that no permit would be required to install the covers. “You don’t even need a permit to do this,” the official said.
Hay said he had been directed previously to remove the covers because of an earlier staff safety finding; he is now budgeting to reinstall the protection after receiving what he said was board agreement in April. The board’s staff follow-up was the only next step recorded in the meeting.
The county did not record a formal vote on the item at this meeting; staff indicated the road department would contact the resident to finalize details.
