Travis Heizer, middle school principal, reported on the district’s four‑week Middle School Summer Learning Academy, which ran Monday through Thursday and provided breakfast and lunch for participating scholars. The program targeted students who had not met expectations in two or more core subjects and included rotations in the four core subjects, social‑emotional learning, STEM, art, swimming and a Spanish credit recovery offering for eighth graders.
Heizer said 27 scholars participated in the Spanish credit recovery program and all 27 earned the credit. Enrollment by grade among attendees was 22 sixth‑graders, 21 seventh‑graders and 25 eighth‑graders. The principal reported a promotion rate of 97% for scholars who attended the academy and said he believed transportation from elementary schools to the middle school contributed to strong attendance.
Heizer described the program as providing smaller cohorts, differentiated instruction and additional relationship-building with staff and said behavior and engagement were positive. He recommended continuing the summer learning academy and replicating the Spanish recovery program to ease transitions into high school.
No budgetary vote was recorded in the transcript; the principal thanked the board for support of the initiative.
