Board approves ordinance to allow camera speed enforcement in work zones

The Board adopted Ordinance O‑15‑25 on Aug. 11 to amend sections 70‑196 and 70‑197 of the New Kent County Code to authorize camera speed monitoring and enforcement in highway work zones and high-risk intersection segments.
Mr. Hathaway told the board the sheriff's office had already monitored speeds with cameras and issued warnings since July; notices will begin being enforced in mid‑August. Chief deputy McLaughlin reported a trial run in which, over an 18‑hour period, "3,500 vehicles were caught speeding," including a single driver going 106 mph in a 60‑mph zone. The sheriff's office has a state permit to issue such violations, and the ordinance clarifies the code to include work zones in addition to school zones.
Supervisor Ms. Pearson moved adoption of the ordinance; the motion passed by roll call with all members voting aye. The board and staff discussed that citations would start on Aug. 12 and that warnings had already been issued during the preliminary enforcement period.
Next steps: the sheriff's office will proceed with enforcement consistent with state permitting; staff did not indicate a change to fine structure during the Aug. 11 meeting.
