Residents, supervisors press VDOT on backups at 64-West ramp; board proposes outreach and work session

Zachary Beasley and multiple supervisors urged action on traffic backups caused by a new traffic light at the 64 West ramp to Richmond during citizens' comment and the VDOT monthly report on Aug. 11.
Beasley described long backups that "had extended down New Kent Highway all the way to the new communities all the way to the community center" and urged the board to "take immediate action to contact VDOT." VDOT regional representative Mark Harlow told the board the agency had received 130 work orders this past month and had completed 119, and that traffic engineering had adjusted light timing. "Our traffic engineering department has changed some of the timing on the lights, trying to help with keeping the backup off of the interstate," Harlow said, but acknowledged the changes had limited effect at some approaches and that the bridge project will keep temporary signals in place for an extended period.
Supervisors recommended an informational meeting with VDOT and the contractor; Ms. Pearson asked for an educational FAQ about the signal changes and Mr. Moyer said engineers were exploring converting part of the ramp to two lanes to improve flow. VDOT indicated work on signal timing and follow-up meetings with county staff and engineers were planned.
Board action and follow-up: supervisors asked staff to continue coordination with VDOT, to arrange a public information session and to hold a work session with the contractor and traffic engineers. No formal motions were recorded against the item at the Aug. 11 meeting.
