Commissioners back application for Building Reuse Program to support ‘Project Emerald City’ — $5.9 million investment, 30 jobs expected

The Nash County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution Sept. 8 supporting an application to the North Carolina Department of Commerce Building Reuse Program for a confidential local manufacturer, identified in the application as “Project Emerald City.” Economic Development Director Andy Hagee told the board the funds would be used for a building expansion at an existing Nash County manufacturer with an anticipated capital investment of $5,900,000 and the creation of 30 new jobs.
Hagee said the project is confidential under a nondisclosure agreement, so the county is using a project code name; the county packet included a draft resolution the board was asked to adopt to signal local support for the Commerce Department application. Commissioner Davis moved approval, Commissioner Leggett seconded, and the board voted in favor.
County staff noted the application itself is the first step for the state grant review process; the resolution expresses local support but does not commit county funds. The county will provide required documentation to Commerce and follow the agency’s confidentiality rules while the project remains under NDA.
The vote was unanimous. Hagee said the county will provide updates when state or company permission allows additional public disclosure.
