Council selects three finalists for interview to fill vacant seat; ranked‑choice style selection used

The Port Angeles City Council on Aug. selected three applicants for interviews to fill the vacancy in council position 7 and directed staff to invite them to a Sept. 2 interview. Using a modified ranked‑choice process, councilors each listed their top three candidates and compiled the results. The three candidates with the most endorsements were John Hamilton, Christy Holy and Laurel Cripe.
Council Member Miller explained the intent of the process and said members would provide their top three in no particular order and that the council could use additional rounds if necessary. "I appreciate everyone applying. I think a lot of interest in the council is really key," Miller said during the discussion. Council agreed to interview the three finalists on Sept. 2 and confirmed the packet’s proposed interview questions with edits suggested by Council Member Miller.
After the selection, Council Member Lindsay Miller moved to schedule interviews on Sept. 2 for the slate of John Hamilton, Christy Holy and Laurel Cripe; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously. The council also approved edits to the candidate interview questions, striking some packet questions and adding five new questions focused on time commitment, top issues for the city, budget approach, strategies to attract and retain businesses, and handling disagreements with a council majority.
Staff will notify the three finalists and publish the revised question set in advance of interviews.
