Worthington superintendent: staggered start Aug. 13–15; construction at both high schools remains on schedule

Superintendent Dr. Trent Bowers told the Worthington Board of Education on Aug. 4 that the district will open school in stages the week of Aug. 13: first- through ninth-grade students will begin Aug. 13, 10th through 12th graders will join on Aug. 14, and Aug. 15 will be the first full day for kindergarten students following two days of kindergarten assessments. The superintendent said the district’s Center Park preschool begins a few weeks later and the district’s back-to-school web pages are live for families seeking bus routes, emergency contacts and other enrollment information. Dr. Bowers said both high-school construction projects remain on time and on budget and that crews are completing cleanup and work over the next weeks so students, including freshmen, can start on Aug. 13. He acknowledged the fall will be challenging because multiple student areas will be unavailable initially, and said each month this fall new areas will come back online. At the meeting the superintendent later reported the district currently has 738 kindergarten registrations, up from 693 at the same point last year; he said staff will update numbers after school starts. Board members asked questions about numbers and thanked welcome-center staff for assisting with summer enrollments and bilingual support for families.
