Board adopts K‑12 academic standards; members and staff seek legal guidance on parental‑rights implications

Chris presented the district's annual adoption of academic standards required by statute and told the board the standards guide K‑12 instruction across disciplines and that adoption is a routine, statutory obligation. "This is standard operating procedure annually by statute, 1 20.12 sub 13," he said, noting the district will vet resources, including social‑studies materials, and that some subject standards had not been updated by DPI in many years.

Board members used the discussion to flag concerns about parental notification and opt‑out rights following a recent court ruling they named in the meeting as Mahmood v. Taylor, which trustees said reaffirmed parental rights and generated questions about how districts notify families about curriculum and controversial classroom content. One board member said parents often have difficulty getting timely information about classroom content and that the district's current process can be slow; another noted administrators have complied when parents request opt‑outs and provide alternate assignments.

Administrators told the board they are consulting legal counsel and attending state meetings to seek guidance and recommended the board still adopt the standards as required by statute. The motion to adopt the 2025–26 academic standards passed; the vote recorded one nay and the motion carried.

Administrators said they will return to the board when clear legal guidance is available and that they are exploring ways to increase transparency and earlier parental awareness of course content and syllabi.
