The Marblehead School Committee voted Wednesday to appoint five community members to an advisory committee tasked with advising the district on the high school roof project.
The nut graf: The advisory group will include local residents with construction, project-management and facilities experience; the committee will advise the school committee, which retains final decision-making authority.
Superintendent (presenter) and committee members discussed eight applicants; the five community members voted onto the advisory committee were Sam Altruder, Mark Liebman, Brian Sarafin, Ralph Wallace and Karima Maloney. The district said advisory members will be voting members of the advisory group and that school-committee decisions remain the official votes for project approvals.
A committee member emphasized that paid contractors or consultants will be advisory and not be given sole voting control; administration said consultants would provide technical expertise without supplanting the committee's role. The advisory group will also include two district administrators and a school-committee representative; the administration described the advisory panel as a way to broaden subject-matter expertise for the project.
The motion to appoint the five community members passed unanimously.
Ending: The district will convene the advisory group and provide meeting materials to the committee; the superintendent said he will circulate an "instant recap" email template summarizing meetings to the public and to committee members.
