Commission backs letter of support for parks-and-rec catch-and-release fishing program at industrial park

The County Commission on Aug. 6 authorized the commission president to sign a letter of support for a proposed catch-and-release fishing program run by Parks & Recreation at the county industrial park.

Parks and Recreation staff said the program would focus on a pond in the industrial park area that is separate from sale parcels and would include safety improvements, an access pathway and limited improvements to make the area safer for families. The parks director noted the EDA (Economic Development Authority) and county ownership questions around the industrial park property and said the program would need appropriate permissions if parcels are sold in the future.

Commissioners voiced support for the idea and noted the program—'s potential as a family activity and a low-cost recreation option. One commissioner said the plan would include signage and catch-and-release rules; another suggested the county might need to reassess liability and insurance if the pond drew more users or if lots adjacent to the pond were sold.

A motion to authorize the county commission president to sign a letter of support passed by voice vote.
