Craven County Sheriff Hughes told the Board of Commissioners the sheriff's office would like approval to roll over $15,025 in donated funds and $31,853 for equipment and supplies whose purchase orders already had been issued; commissioners approved both rollovers.

Hughes also requested and won approval for a payout of $54,366 to cover accrued vacation and holiday pay for a departed detention officer. The sheriff told commissioners the department has reduced comp-time accrual and that the payout primarily covered vacation and holiday balances for the employee who "has left us."

Hughes briefed the board on hurricane-season preparations, saying the office has high-rise vehicles ready for flood response and that all schools are covered for the upcoming term; he said the sheriff's office is prepared to deploy as needed during the meteorological peak. The sheriff also reported supply-chain delays for ammunition and some vehicle parts and asked the board to permit rollovers for ordered items so the purchases can be completed when deliveries arrive.

Commissioners approved the three budget items on unanimous roll-call votes. The sheriff did not request additional county funding for preparedness beyond the rollovers and said the office will continue to coordinate with county emergency management.
