Fire chief rescinds resignation; board accepts rescission and refers matter to the fire commission; department launches orientation academy

Fire Chief Al Carr told the Village of Salem Lakes board he would be willing to rescind his earlier resignation and remain in his position to provide continuity while the village moves through administrative staff changes. The board accepted his rescission and referred the matter to the village's fire commission for formal review and action. Chief Carr told trustees he had discussed the option with his family and was prepared to remain ' indefinitely or until a time determined by the board and the fire commission ' to help steady the department through a period of leadership and administrative transition. He said the department has begun a new, intensive week-long orientation academy for new members; at the time of the meeting nine candidates were enrolled in the program, which staff described as focused on professional accountability, continuity, and building skills and decision-making. Board members expressed appreciation for the chief's offer to stay and noted the fire commission must still consider the rescission. The village had already contracted a recruitment firm for chief search work and received several applicants; staff told trustees the recruitment firm had produced a pool of candidates (about 10 applicants had been received for the chief search). The board voted to accept the rescission and forward it to the fire commission for formal action. Chief Carr also gave the department report, saying call volume had increased and the department had been busy with runs and work at the county fair; he described the new orientation academy as a step toward professionalizing the service and improving recruitment and retention. The board directed that the fire commission convene to review the rescission and consider next steps. Trustees praised the department's recent progress and the chief's willingness to remain through the transition.
