Belton ISD highlights national competition students at board meeting

Three students who competed at national career and technical education conferences told the Belton ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 18 how those experiences shaped their postsecondary goals and preparedness.
At the district’s regular meeting at the Pittenger Fine Arts Center, Anya, a junior at Belton High School, said the laboratory work she did for a HOSA research-poster event “got me interested in research.” Shahya Lane, a recent Lake Belton High School graduate who was entered in medical coding at nationals, described being placed in the wrong event and persevering to a top finish. Joseph, a Belton High senior who competed in SkillsUSA Teamworks, said he served as team lead and “was the plumber for my team.”
The showcase was a short agenda item in which each student gave a two- to five-minute account of what they learned and how the trip affected their future plans. Trustees and district leaders praised the students for demonstrating the district’s graduate competencies and gave them a round of applause.
Anya described lab techniques she learned while preparing her poster: “I learned how to dilute solutions and micropipette and plate agar and bacteria,” which she said prepared her for “infectious disease or microbiology” research. Shahya said the nationals experience did not change her career plans—she plans to study civil engineering—but did expose her to other fields. Joseph said competing had helped him earn scholarships.
Trustees said the student presentations illustrated the district’s emphasis on career-ready skills and applauded staff who coach competitive programs. The showcase concluded before the board moved into formal business.
The students who spoke were identified by first name only in the meeting but are listed in district records and were introduced as participants in HOSA, BPA and SkillsUSA.
