County officials said recent federal operations were a federal matter and the county had no formal role; officials noted the county jail is not licensed to hold federal prisoners overnight unless there are existing county charges. A county official said, “we're not licensed to hold them overnight,” and that federal detainees may be transferred to neighboring licensed facilities such as those in Clinton County or to GEO facilities when required.
A commissioner expressed support for federal efforts to remove individuals identified as violent criminals from the community but framed the matter as a federal enforcement action, not a county decision. The board also discussed staffing shortages in the county correctional facility and said the county is not pursuing changes to hold federal detainees because of the higher costs, licensing requirements and staffing burdens such a change would create.
Separately, the board reported an Aug. 28 executive session in which commissioners met to discuss legal matters and scheduled another executive session to follow the Aug. 29 public meeting. No public action was taken in those sessions; summaries were announced consistent with county practice.
