Council renews extended alcohol-sales option on first reading with two-year sunset

The Commerce City Council on Aug. 19 passed on first reading an ordinance to authorize extended hours for alcohol sales for current and future eligible holders (a retail late‑hour certificate), with a two‑year sunset.
City Manager Lisenby explained the city had previously allowed extended weekend hours in a pilot that included sunset provisions. “About 4 years ago… council approved that with a 2 year sunset… In 2023…the council renewed it for another 2 year sunset term from '23 to '25,” Lisenby said. Staff reported there were no clear police-record trends showing the extended hours produced adverse effects.
Staff said only two establishments appear to use extended hours and that neither is operating to the full 2 a.m. allowance; one or both close earlier on most nights. Police said they had not experienced negative incidents tied to the extended hours during their tenure.
A council member moved to pass the ordinance on first reading with a two‑year sunset; the motion passed on voice vote. The ordinance will return for final reading before taking effect.
