Council approves first reading to prohibit parking on west side of Mangum Street
Summary
On first reading the council approved an ordinance to ban parking on the west side of a narrow segment of Mangum Street between Aldridge and Maple, citing concerns about emergency access and narrow pavement.
The Commerce City Council gave first reading Aug. 19 to an ordinance prohibiting parking on the west side of Mangum Street between Aldridge Street and Maple Street.
Staff told the council the pavement in that section is narrow, and vehicles parked on both sides make passage difficult for other drivers and for emergency responders. “That section of Mangum between Aldridge and Maple is fairly narrow pavement section. And if people are parking on the streets on both sides of Mangum, it becomes very hard to pass through there, which also adds to challenges for first responders, to move through,” a staff member said.
Based on resident feedback, staff recommended converting the street to permit parking on one side only, with signs installed prohibiting parking on the west side. Council moved the ordinance forward on first reading; a motion passed on voice vote.
Staff indicated the ordinance provides for a class C misdemeanor penalty and a fine not to exceed $500, consistent with the city code chapter on traffic and parking. The item will return for final reading and formal adoption at a subsequent meeting.
