The Commerce City Council on Aug. 19 approved an engagement letter with Brooks Watson and Company CPA to provide audit services for fiscal years ending Sept. 30, 2025 through Sept. 30, 2029.
Assistant City Manager for financial services Miss Campbell told the council the firm prefers to begin audit work mid‑year to reduce the workload at the fiscal-year end. The engagement includes a 3% increase each year and separates the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) audit billing from the city’s billing, Campbell said.
Campbell said the city required improved termination clauses after problems with the prior auditor, who she said became unresponsive near critical deadlines. “March was quickly approaching, and we had not started… we decided let's find a great firm, which we did,” Campbell said, describing the council’s prior experience that prompted stronger contract protections.
Council approved the multi‑year engagement; staff reported both legal teams had executed the final contract and that the engagement contains additional protections for the city.
Campbell said the firm’s approach should reduce concentrated year‑end effort and help meet state and grant audit deadlines.
