Milton preliminary enrollment steady; officials ask families to complete residency checks

Superintendent John Phelan presented preliminary enrollment figures at the Aug. 20 meeting, saying Milton Public Schools had 4,373 students enrolled in grades pre‑K through 13 as of the reporting date he cited — up 10 students from the end of the 2024–25 school year.
Phelan emphasized that the district’s official enrollment count for state reporting is the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Oct. 1 snapshot and that the district will present a full enrollment report after that date. “That enrollment is taken by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Ed on October 1 of every year,” he said.
District staff have been conducting residency reestablishment for families with students entering grades 3, 6 and 9 and reported outreach results: at the high school, eight families were working on documents and 15 had not yet started; Pierce Middle School had four families working and 18 not started; elementary grade‑3 reestablishment showed six families working and four not started. The superintendent said staff had sent four separate communications about the requirement and warned families that paperwork not received by a stated deadline may delay a child’s start date while the district processes last-minute folders.
The administration said it is hand‑placing elementary students to balance class sizes and try to place students in their resident school. Staff named Serena Burke and Brad Spindle as leads on registration and thanked a returning staff member, Marty McKenna, for helping process folders over two weeks.
Officials asked families to submit required residency and registration materials promptly and said the district would work with families on a case‑by‑case basis to minimize delayed starts.
