Mayor Javier Figueroa said the council received a written resignation from Council member Steve Worthington and read the letter to the body and public. "I am writing to formally submit my resignation from the University Place City Council effective 08/30/2025," the letter states.
The letter thanked city staff and fellow council members and cited nearly 12 years of service. "Serving the residents of University Place over the past nearly 12 years has been one of the greatest honors of my life," it says.
Figueroa told the council he would schedule an event to honor Worthington and that Worthington had already agreed to a date. City staff later continued the meeting with roll call and routine business.
The resignation was presented to the council as a written, effective action; the transcript does not record a separate vote by the council to accept the resignation. The mayor indicated staff and the council will arrange an honor and make announcements when that date is set.
The council continued to other business after the reading of the letter.
