Gaston County Schools reports summer facilities work, approves sewer easement for Forest Heights site

The Gaston County Board of Education received an update on summer facilities work Aug. 18 and unanimously approved a sewer easement granting the City of Gastonia and 2 Rivers access to property adjacent to Forest Heights.
Assistant Superintendent of Operations Bessie Harvey told the board the district focused this summer on building refreshes, LED lighting upfits, freezer and cooler replacements, chiller and boiler work, kitchen piping and drainage, bottle-filler installations and perimeter fencing. “These items will be presented to the full board tonight, on the in our regular meeting,” Harvey said during committee remarks.
Harvey also described the use of a construction-manager-at-risk (CMAR) method for the Belmont Central addition, noting the approach will allow the construction manager to work alongside architects and engineers to oversee the project. She said the district may use CMAR for larger projects in the future.
On the easement, Harvey said the parcel is “located, adjacent to our Forest Heights Building” and that the roadway in question had not been used in many years; the easement will allow the city and 2 Rivers to “tie in to that sewer.” The board voted to approve access; the motion passed unanimously with a second recorded by Mr. AM Stevens.
The board was also informed that the annual surplus sale for 2024–25 generated $3,885.29 from outdated equipment and vehicles; the amount will be returned to the general fund.
Greer Middle School: Harvey highlighted the district’s recent ribbon-cutting for the new Greer Middle School and said work will commence soon on phase two athletic fields, with the full campus expected to be complete by next year.
What the board decided: The board approved the sewer easement and recorded the surplus report. Other facilities projects were described for future board-level contract approvals.
Administrative detail: Harvey credited in-house staff and contractors for completing much of the summer work and thanked project managers and supervisors for their roles in Greer’s opening.
