Board members discussed community feedback Aug. 11 about the school calendar, saying families had asked whether Westlake could start earlier and end earlier to better align with neighboring districts and to reduce conflicts with summer programs and extracurricular starts. Board members compared start and end dates with a neighboring district (example given: start Aug. 21 and end June 4 vs. Westlake's Aug. 26 to June 9) and directed staff to include calendar timing in the next calendar-review process. The board discussed whether to change the 2026'27 calendar and concluded staff should pull data and revisit the committee that prepares calendars; no formal vote was taken. Board members also described constituent communications about special education and transportation and summarized outreach the district has done to state legislators and the governor's office. Board members said the district works with the education alliance and that staff and board members have contacted legislators to convey district concerns about pending state proposals; the board discussed advocacy approaches and emphasized continuing respectful, fact-based engagement. Members asked staff to gather comparative start/end-date data from nearby districts and to present options at the calendar committee for consideration for future calendar cycles. The board did not adopt a new calendar at the meeting and will consider changes through the usual calendar-committee process.
