The Sierra Vista City Council on Aug. 14 presented a certificate of appreciation to Sierra Vista Little League after the organization donated nearly $40,000 for two permanent scoreboards at the Billstone Complex, city staff said.
A city staff speaker told the council the almost $40,000 donation funded the cooperative purchase of the two scoreboards now mounted on Stone 1 and Stone 2. The speaker added the Little League also paid directly to contractors for fencing, electrical work and scoreboard installation, bringing the total project cost to roughly $60,000.
"The $40,000 was donated to the city so we could utilize cooperative purchasing and support the upkeep of that equipment for years to come," the staff speaker said. He told the council volunteers and staff previously spent significant time installing temporary fences and locating sockets for temporary equipment but that the permanent installations will streamline field setup.
Council members and Parks and Recreation staff praised the Little League and volunteer families for their years of service to youth sports. The new scoreboards were operational for the district tournament and used during an 8-to-10-year-old state tournament that brought 14 teams from across Arizona, the staff report said.
No council action was required; the presentation recognized the donation and the partnership between the city and the Little League.
