Public commenter urges TDC help to host Move United adaptive-sports event; raises airport accessibility for hidden-disability travelers

At the start of the Aug. 18 meeting, public commenter Pat Simmons asked the Tourist Development Council to consider a quick response to an invitation from Move United to host a national adaptive sports competition. Simmons said host cities typically provide accessible venues and meeting facilities and that the event could attract roughly 400 athletes, 100 coaches and about 500 volunteers plus family and friends; the application deadline, he said, is Aug. 29.

Simmons also reported a personal experience at Sarasota‑Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) regarding sunflower lanyards (used to identify travelers with hidden disabilities). He said bus drop‑off points were a quarter- to half‑mile from terminals, that there was no two‑way communications method to request assistance once a bus leaves the drop‑off area, and that travelers with invisible disabilities (those who need assistance but do not use mobility devices) can be left without a way to summon help between bus stops and terminals. Simmons encouraged TDC staff to coordinate with airport authorities.

Elliot Falcone acknowledged the Move United suggestion and said staff could connect with airport leadership to investigate the sunflower lanyard access issues and to determine whether Manatee County and airport partners could support a bid or address the communications gap.
