Chief Eason presented the Oakland Police Department’s 2025 awards during the commission meeting, recognizing officers for life‑saving actions, community engagement and school safety work.
Chief Eason said Officer Brianna Fernandez responded to a call on June 25, 2025, at the Johns Landing subdivision and "recognized the symptoms being experienced by the subject to be consistent with an opioid overdose." When a first dose of Narcan did not restore breathing, the chief said Officer Fernandez "obtained a second dose of Narcan" and administered it, "resulting in the subject regaining consciousness." The chief announced Officer Fernandez would receive the department’s Life Saving Award.
Chief Eason also recognized corporal Sean Dozier and Officer Jason Hayes for proactive community engagement and high activity during the first half of 2025, noting they "conducted 195 traffic stops resulted in a 162 verbal warnings and 33 citations," and citing letters and social media messages praising their work. For their initiative, the chief presented the department’s Achievement Award; Dozier additionally received the department’s Community Service Award for his emphasis on community engagement.
Corporal Anthony Edwards and Austin Koval received the Department's Award of Commendation for developing intelligence and coordinating trespass warnings and working with Orange County to address encampments and property crime. The chief also presented a Community Service Award to Officer Samaria Lake for her first full year as the SRO at Oakwood Avenue Charter School, citing multiple letters from parents and staff praising her bond with students and provision of safety training for staff.
The chief noted a local training provider, Decision Tactical, offered a free full-day training to each officer of the quarter. The awards were presented in person and the chief asked officers to gather for a group photo.
Why it matters: the awards highlight life‑saving response to opioid overdose, proactive community policing tied to property-crime reductions and the role of a school resource officer in building school‑community relationships.
