Commission tables veterans committee item to Aug. 20 after coalition asks for more collaboration

The Coral Springs City Commission on Aug. 6 agreed to continue a proposed resolution to establish a city veterans committee to a date certain of Aug. 20 after representatives of the Veterans Coalition requested more time and a meeting to discuss overlap and collaboration.
Jay Phillip Elm, who identified himself as representing the Veterans Coalition in Coral Springs, asked the commission to table resolution 2025-025 because, he said, the coalition already performs many of the functions described in the proposed resolution and the coalition had not been explicitly included in the draft. "I am respectfully asking the city commission to table the approval vote scheduled for later in the agenda and have a meeting with the veterans coalition executive board to discuss the city what the city is attempting to accomplish with the establishment of the new committee," Elm said during public comment.
Mayor (no last name provided) and staff accepted the request and asked staff to meet with coalition representatives before the Aug. 20 meeting. City staff said they have been meeting with coalition leaders, designated a city liaison role and scheduled a meeting with the coalition for Aug. 19. Mike (staff) said Anthony Guzman from Parks and Recreation, a 22-year Army veteran, will be the liaison and Captain Cherry will be the staff liaison for the veterans committee; both will back each other up to maintain consistent messaging.
The commission motioned and voted to continue item 18 to a date certain, Aug. 20, to allow staff and coalition leaders to meet and return with a plan that clarifies collaboration and membership. The vote to continue carried 5-0.
Commissioners said they want the veterans committee to complement—not supplant—the existing Veterans Coalition and encouraged continued collaboration. "We want both entities to thrive and support one another," Mike told the commission when outlining planned meetings and liaison roles.
