The West Bend Public Library reported extensive water damage from an early-August storm during its Aug. 19 board meeting, and board members described building and program disruptions while staff work to repair the facility.
Brett, a library board member, summarized the director's report: water intrusion damaged the entrance area, the circulation desk and the Library Recreation Center (LRC). Carpeting and electrical conduits located in the floor were affected and required rewiring; the elevator sustained damage; water reached the basement and ruined the dance floors and some drywall and shelving. The board reported that, despite the damage, library staff confirmed no books were destroyed or damaged.
To keep services running, the library established a temporary entrance on the east side of the building off Sixth Avenue. Several programs were canceled due to space constraints while repair and drying work proceed, and the popular story-time program will be held at Regner Beach House for the near future. Board members thanked Parks and Recreation staff and city personnel, specifically John Fellows and Todd Meeks, for managing incident logistics so the library director could focus on library operations.
The board also approved routine items including preliminary 2026 budget figures, updates to the code of conduct policy and the 2026 capital improvement project request; the board scheduled its next meeting for Sept. 16 to discuss the director's annual evaluation.
