Oakland Police Chief Eason on Aug. 12 presented second-quarter awards to officers for life-saving action, community engagement, property-crime investigations and school safety work.
Chief Eason said Officer Brianna Fernandez responded to a sick or injured person on June 25, 2025, recognized signs of an opioid overdose, and administered two doses of naloxone (Narcan) after the first dose did not revive the subject. "Because of her quick response and actions related to her training, Officer Fernandez deployed 2 doses of Narcan successfully reviving an individual experiencing a life threatening overdose," Chief Eason said at the meeting. The department awarded her its life-saving award.
The chief also honored Corporal Sean Dozier and Officer Jason Hayes with an Achievement Award and gave Corporal Dozier a Community Service Award for what the chief described as repeated community engagement. The chief reported the two officers led the agency in several categories during the reporting period, stating that during the period Jan. 1–June 30, 2025 they conducted 195 traffic stops that resulted in 162 verbal warnings and 33 citations. The chief noted Officer Hayes completed recertification as a firearm and Taser instructor.
Officer Nicole Hall and Corporal Anthony Edwards received an Award of Commendation for proactive work addressing a rise in property-related crimes. The chief said Hall created a master list of unhoused individuals observed in wooded areas along State Road 50 and gathered intelligence that helped close multiple cases; Edwards located encampments, worked with property owners and Orange County to issue trespass warnings and coordinated responses so private owners could proceed with property plans.
Chief Eason also presented a Community Service Award to Officer Samaria Lake for her first full year as the school resource officer at Oakland Avenue Charter School. The chief read correspondence from parents and staff praising Lake’s rapport with students and the safety training she provided to staff.
The chief said Corporal Edwards also assisted Winter Garden Police Department by locating a vehicle where the occupant was alleged to have used a firearm; Edwards recovered the firearm and turned the suspect and evidence over to Winter Garden PD.
No formal action was required; the presentations were ceremonial recognitions initiated by the police chief.
