Oakland staff outline roadwork priorities: mill and resurface funding, San Sperilla closure, intersection project planned

Town staff told the commission the town has set aside funding in next year’s proposed budget for milling and resurfacing in a neighborhood where pavement cracking is pronounced, and that staff will present a final prioritized street improvement report at an upcoming commission meeting.

A short road closure on San Sperilla Road, the through street in Longleaf that connects State Road 50 and Oakland Avenue, began this week for installation of a stormwater crossing; staff said the work is scheduled to be completed by Friday, weather permitting. Staff also said their paving contractor, Stephen Rodeward, will return to the Oakland Shores neighborhood the week of Sept. 15 to finish driveway work and to install additional millings on North Harrington Street to improve consistency of materials across patches.

Construction on Catherine Ross is progressing, staff said, and they are monitoring the Atlantic storm season to avoid delays at the John’s Lake outfall crossing. The town recently received final plans to improve the three‑way intersection at Canyon Creek, Mackey and Winters Landing; staff said bidding and contractor selection are anticipated in fiscal year 2026, with construction possibly beginning in January or February if schedules align.

Staff described that crack sealing at this stage would not be a cost‑effective remedy for roads that have cracked extensively and that full milling and resurfacing is a better investment for some blocks.
