Morton board reviews draft mutual-aid school safety agreement with regional ROEs; vote set for May

Morton CUSD 709 administrators presented a draft intergovernmental agreement developed with Regional Offices of Education in Peoria and Tazewell counties to formalize mutual aid for school safety and emergency response.
Assistant administrators said the Central Illinois Valley School Safety Team (SIV SST) drafted the agreement to reduce response delays and clarify liability and support arrangements among neighboring districts. The draft was reviewed by school counsel on behalf of the ROEs, and Peoria’s ROE superintendent planned minor edits before returning a revised version.
Administrators gave examples of how the agreement would work in practice: sending buses to assist another district during an emergency, dispatching counselors or social workers, or rapid sharing of resources during severe-weather or safety incidents. They said the goal was to remove legal uncertainty that can delay a helping district from dispatching resources. "This kind of agreement... settles your mind on that," one presenter said, describing the value of clarifying protections and responsibilities.
Board members supported the concept and asked staff to bring a redlined, attorney-reviewed version back for approval at the May 6 meeting.
