Morton CUSD 709 honored its seventh- and eighth-grade junior-high volleyball teams Tuesday, recognizing both squads for reaching the state tournament and earning fourth-place trophies.
Mr. Hammond introduced the teams and praised coaches and volunteers, saying the seventh-grade team’s trophy continued "a third year in a row" of postseason success for the program and that players showed consistent hard work and volunteerism during the state tournament. "This group was a super, super fun group. They are very skilled, they're very talented, they're extremely hard workers," Hammond said.
Coach Odom and Coach Williams highlighted team culture, travel schedules that begin in December and the sustained development across the junior-high program. Coach Odom noted the season’s early tests against strong opponents and said midseason setbacks helped the players grow. Coach Williams described the eighth-grade team’s repeat state success and said the group finished the season 27–4, with close margins in several losses.
Administrators and coaches credited parents, school staff and community volunteers for supporting travel, hosting postseason events and running a Friday-night tailgate for state play. The board had no public comments related to the recognition item.
