Gahanna officials formally swore in Connie as a communications technician for the Gahanna Division of Police on Tuesday, marking the completion of her training and the addition of a fully trained dispatcher to the department.
Mayor Jadwin introduced the swearing-in and praised the role, saying dispatchers are “the calm voice in a storm and are certainly the leading edge of help when our residents need it the most.” Director Becker noted Connie is the first communications technician hired to complete training in the city since Becker's tenure, and Police Chief Spence said the city has “been working diligently over the last year or so to bring more communications technicians into that role,” calling the training “very difficult” and praising Connie for completing it.
Chief Spence and other staff cited the six- to seven-month training program that covers 911 calls, nonemergency calls, radio traffic and the technology in the communications center. Chief Spence also mentioned another trainee, Makayla Fulham, who is near completion. Angie Collins (center manager) and Louise (training officer) were named as staff involved in training.
No council action was required; the swearing-in was a ceremonial personnel event and the council offered congratulations to Connie and her family.
