Resident Roxana Lopez urged the Nogales City Council on Sept. 3 to install permanent restrooms at Buffalo Soldier Park on Western Avenue, saying families and children have relied on a nearby Circle K for access and that the situation is unhygienic.
Lopez said the park has not had restrooms since it opened about 17 years ago and has asked parks staff and local businesses for interim solutions; she told the council she spoke with the Circle K manager, who expressed willingness to cooperate, but said a permanent city solution is needed.
Why it matters: Lack of restrooms at neighborhood parks creates public-health and accessibility issues and can discourage families from using facilities. Lopez also asked the council to provide six-month progress reports for park projects and other community priorities.
Council response: Council members acknowledged the long-standing nature of the request and asked parks staff to review park amenities across the system; staff and the mayor said they will consider the restroom request as part of parks and recreation planning.
