Superintendent Rulli said the East Islip School District had a "strong start to the year" and that "our schools and grounds are fully prepared to work with students and staff." He thanked custodial, clerical, grounds and administrative staff and said the district used the summer months for curriculum writing and teacher professional development, including elementary science training led by the district's director of humanities.
The comments came during the superintendent's report at a regular Board of Education meeting. Board President advised the audience on public comment procedures earlier in the meeting, instructing that only people who signed in before the meeting would be recognized and that public remarks would be limited to three minutes.
Rulli said this year's theme is "better together," noting staff collaboration, student engagement and family support as evidence that the district is "set forth successfully in inspiring" the school community. He also acknowledged the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11 and said the district "honor[s] the memory of those who were lost" and recognizes the courage of first responders.
Earlier in the meeting the Board observed the pledge and a moment of silence. The Board President told the audience they could remain standing after the pledge and asked attendees to observe silence when requested.
No formal Board action was taken during the superintendent's report segment; the remarks were informational and preceded several consent and personnel votes later in the agenda.
