General Counsel announced at the Aug. 26 meeting that the Orange County School Board will hold a closed executive session at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, to discuss ongoing litigation captioned Penguin Random House LLC et al. v. Ben Gibson et al., case number 6:24‑cv‑1573‑CEM‑RMN.
Counsel cited the statutory authority for the closed meeting, Florida Statutes §286.011(8), and read a public notice specifying the time, place (Conference Room E, first floor, Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center) and the persons authorized to attend. Those named included the board chair and board members, Superintendent Maria Vasquez, General Counsel and outside counsel Howard Marks, and a court reporter. Counsel said additional information would be provided to the board during the executive session.
The board did not discuss case details in open session. The announcement established the date and invited the named participants to attend the closed session to receive counsel and provide direction, consistent with the statute cited by counsel.
