The Orange County School Board unanimously approved renaming Beta School to Expectant Excellence Academy at its Aug. 26 meeting after the program relocated to Washington Shores Primary Learning Center.
Officials said the program, which provides educational services to teen and expectant mothers since 1972, moved from its Lake Underhill Road address to the Washington Shores campus. The previous community partner retained ownership of the Beta name after the relocation, prompting the district to seek a new name under Board policy FF. Alternative Education staff solicited name suggestions from students, families, employees and community members; three names emerged and Expectant Excellence Academy received the most support from participants, with 75 percent of students, 82 percent of faculty and 100 percent of participating parents favoring the name, the presenter said.
Presenter Michael Moody (Alternative Education) introduced Principal Bill Tovine and resource teacher Dan Smith and explained the naming process required by board policy FF, which directs the superintendent to present three recommended names based on community input and asks the school board to select the final name. Member Vicki Felder moved to adopt Expectant Excellence Academy; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
Officials said the relocation and renaming are intended to broaden academic supports and expand access to on‑site daycare and services for young parents and their children. The board did not discuss costs or a construction timeline for the new site during the public meeting.
