The Marshalltown Community School District board on Sept. 2 approved the superintendent and board goals for the 2025–26 school year, emphasizing regular data presentations on student achievement, strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism and continued facilities work.
Dr. Theron Schutte, the superintendent of schools, presented goals that mirror board priorities: providing concise, regular data on student performance; identifying key performance indicators to integrate into the district’s strategic plan; improving student attendance; and continued participation in formal board development opportunities. The board discussed hosting an Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) workshop in December focused on board roles and responsibilities ahead of November elections.
The goals also direct work on communications — including a plan for monthly op-eds with the Times Republican to highlight student and staff successes — and further practical work on school safety. Staff noted a project to turn the district safety plan into teacher-friendly “cheat sheets” such as posters or flashcards to support practical implementation.
Board members received updates on capital projects. Superintendent Schutte said Franklin Field is expected to be completed this fall or early winter. The REMATCH and Miller projects are progressing and are still expected to go out to bid in late January or February. Schutte said the district is working with Boyd Jones to redevelop a long-term facilities maintenance and improvement plan to guide future work.
There was no public opposition during this agenda item. The board voted 7-0 to approve the superintendent and school board 2025–26 goals.
