The Ottumwa Community School District board approved five overnight student trips for Evans and Liberty students in grades six through nine, after a presentation from district staff. Maria, a district staff member who presented the trips, told the board that per board policy any overnight trip requires board approval. "Our travel program is not just Evans anymore. It encompasses both Liberty students and, Evans students, sixth grade through ninth grade, and we have 5 different trips that we will be taking students on pending board approval throughout the year," she said. The program includes staples the district has run for years and the presenter said the district recently reinstated a popular trip to Yellowstone. Maria said the packet provided to board members includes dates, summaries and a detailed calendar of fundraisers and information meetings, and she said the district is planning fundraising so "any student that wants to go can afford to go." Board members moved and seconded approval and the motion passed by voice/hand vote. Discussion and voting occurred during the action-item segment of the meeting; no separate public comment on the trips was recorded. The district will proceed with the planned schedule and fundraising activities outlined in the board packet and staff presentation; board members did not attach conditions to the approval in the meeting record.
